the Icelandic Met Office (IMO) in cooperation with the University of Reading, UK, released a few weather balloons from the IMO. Attached to the balloons where traditional upper level radiosonde instruments, that measure temperature, humidity and winds, but also solar radiation and electric charge detection instruments as well as a geiger counter. The hope is that in an explosive eruption these additional instruments will assist in detection of ash layers in the atmosphere. During the first release it was rather windy and a group of people was needed to assist with the release! Photo: Guðrún Nína Petersen, IMO
